The Tobacco Safety Movement (TSM) has affected almost everyone in the U.S and farther. If it weren’t for the Tobacco Safety Movement the person right next to you would be smoking a cigarette and then you would be smoking, eventually. It started in 1964 when  someone got suspicious and tested those cigarettes, then he found out what they really were… (be thankful for that scientist) he had found out that the cigarettes had Tobacco and nicotine in them. when he showed the reports to the authorities congress had put labels on cigarette packages so people could see what it did. but the teenagers were still all about them still, everyone would smoke, your dad, maybe your mom, and also your older brother, they were hooked, which sucked! So, They had to fight off tobacco and raise awareness that smoking is a killer to most people and causes cancer.

One of the people who directed the TSM was the famous Jeffrey Wigand. Jeffrey Wigand became famous in the 1990s when he took public his knowledge that cigarette companies had tried to conceal the dangers of smoking. Tobacco industry whistleblower. Jeffrey Wigand was born on December 17, 1942 in New York City, he had five siblings in which he was the oldest. His parents were very strict and showed not a lot of affection to their children. Jeffrey wigand was a gifted student, particularly in chemistry and biology, Wigand dreamed of becoming a doctor. He attended Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie where he ran on the cross-country team and worked part-time as a scrub nurse at Vassar Brothers Hospital.

Afterwards he instead got a job for a science teacher at a japanese high school, where the amount of money he made was 10X less than the previous job he had, Therefore he decided to get a job on the talk show “60 minutes”  where they talked about the tobacco industry making a fire safe cigarette. At this point we can see that Jeffrey wigand is about to become part of  the TSM.  After finding out the tobacco industry’s dirty secret of  the addictive properties of cigarettes and the horrible drugs stashed in them, which cause many people lung and mouth cancer. Driven by a potent mixture of moral outrage and desire for revenge, Wigand slowly overcame his fear of retribution to expose the tobacco industry’s lies about the health risks of cigarettes. On November 29, 1995 he gave deposition testimony in a case brought by the state of Mississippi against tobacco companies in which he stated that tobacco companies manipulated nicotine content, suppressed efforts to develop safer cigarettes and that they had lied about the addictive properties of nicotine.

With the tobacco industry’s workers about to lose their job they quickly retaliated and sent death threats to his home. Eventually he was so scared of being killed at any moment he had decided to move.

If it wasn’t for Jeffrey wigand’s bravery and his testimony the entire world has changed in one way or the other. Without the TSM Daly elementary would have teachers and or kids smoking and causing lung cancer in little children with developing lungs.
