Static Electricity

We had a great day in Room 661 playing with electricity, static electricity.  The students were documenting what happened when a charge balloon came close to various objects in the classroom.  Some of the objects that were tested were paper dots, the walls, chairs, hair, and soda cans.

We will be building circuits in the next few days as well.  We watched a couple of videos about static electricity.  Some of the videos involved some seriously crazy contraptions….. I think they want to build them.   :-\

The Labor Movement

The Labor Movement

By: Briana

The Labor movement was started when farm workers were treated badly because they got paid horrible for the hours they worked. For example sometimes if they worked 10 hours they only got paid $2 for their work.

This is Cesar Chavez giving a speech

Cesar Estrada Chavez

A man named Cesar Estrada Chavez helped those people. Cesar Chavez was Mexican American. He was born in Yuma, Arizona on March 31, 1927. Cesar and a few other people set out to help in 1962 and founded the National farm workers association. The union got together with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike against grape growers in California in 1965.“The fight is never about grapes or lettuce It is always about people.” During that time volunteers fanned out across the country to try to convince stores to stop selling grapes and to convince customers to stop buying them. At the end they got many victories. Chavez was one of the important labor leaders. Chavez went on hunger strikes which is believed to have led to his death on April 23, 1993 in San Luis, Arizona.

First Labor Day

The first Labor Day was Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, and is dedicated to the economic achievements of American workers. Matthew Maguire first proposed the holiday but others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Today we celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of September. People celebrate with parades, parties, picnics, barbecues, fireworks, displays and athletic events across the U.S.

Farm Workers

For more than a century farm workers had been denied a decent life in the fields. They have tried but failed to organize giant agribusiness farms most of the observers considered it hopeless. But by the 1960’s things began to change. In 15 years more than 50,000 farm workers were protected by the union. The Bracero program is an arrangement between the U.S and the Mexican government’s began to be law 78 in 1951.

Because of the labor movement, farm workers got more rights and now they get payed better but their working conditions aren’t the best for them.  Because of this, more work needs to be done.

Gabriel’s Movement Paper

Stop Smoking!

By:Gabriel King

Smoking started in 1607 and it still lives now in 2014. Smoking has  killed thousands of people, mostly adults. In this essay I am going to show you what will happen if you smoke.Hopefully, this might stop smokers and people who want to smoke.

Secondhand Smoke:

Secondhand smoke is the mix of the flaming tip of a cigarette and the bad oxygen exhaled by the addicted smoker. This type of smoking includes more than 5,432 chemicals. Thousands are poisonous and more than 63 can cause diseases. Did you know that since the 1960’s Surgeon General’s Report-also known as SG-said that 2.4 million adults that were not smokers died just from inhaling secondhand smoke?A few health problems inside adults contain coronary heart, chest pains, lung cancer, and stroke.

The Effect on Pregnant People:

Smoking can hurt pregnant people to. Smoking from the mother causes sudden infant death syndrome or (SIDS).Compared with inside babies, outside babies that inhale secondhand smoke are more likely to get SIDS. Also, moms that smoke before and after birth, their infants are at 3-4 times greater of the risk. Infants of moms that smoked when pregnant have smaller birth weights.Small birth weights is a straight forward path of babies dying. The weight effect is smaller if the mother smoker quits early while pregnant.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, if you do smoke, you should try to stop.If you don’t smoke but you want to, don’t. It may make you calm and make you feel better, but it can also make you do very bad things.

Malachi’s Civil Rights movement Essay

There is a law called Civil Rights in the 1920′s black people had to do the opposite that white people could do

for an example. Black people had to drink from dirty fountains and white people drank from clean fountains.

Rosa Parks 1913/2005

Rosa Parks was the first lady of Civil Rights and what she did was very brave she was on the bus she refused to give up her seat in the colored section for a white passenger and the white section  is filled.

Little Rock Nine

Were a group of African American student enrolled in little rock central high

school in 1957. Their enrollment was followed by the Little Rock Crisis, in which the students were initially prevented from the racially segregated school by Orval faubus.

Martin Luther king Jr

Was a american pastor, Activist humanitarian and African American Civil Rights movement. He is best known for his roll in the advancement of Civil Rights using non violent Civil disobedience based on his christian beliefs He was born in Michael king, but his father changed his name in the honor of the german reformer martin Luther. A baptist minister,

king became a Civil Rights activist early in his career.

Over they were allowed to go to any school also the little rock nine challenged segregation far in south america and won in conclusion the Civil. Rights movement is still a bad memory for the black.

People in the u.s because the Civil Rights movement is about black people being treated badly in a way that we don’t like for these reason martin Luther king had his speech.

The Car Safety Movement

Unsafe Or Not, Car Safety First

By: Esther

The Car Safety Movement” was a serious movement. It started in the 1870s.  People died and were injured because they didn’t have the safety that we have now. The technology that we have now is more safer than they had back then. We have invented seat belts, car seats, airbags and crash dummies,so less people will die or be injured and more people will be smiling.

Seat Belts- The seat belt supported The Car Safety Movement with a great deal of importance. The seat belt was not approved until 1983 because, the government did not know if the seat belt was safe or not . So in the amount of time they used the Mandatory Belt, for 2 entire months. You would be surprised how many people put the seat belt on “Incorrectly”. Did you know that ¾ crashes occur within 25 miles of your home? Also,VolvoBRAVO you made Car Safety one step closer to PERFECT!! This invention will help us and many years to come.

Car Seats- Car seats are a great way to make kids safer and protected in the car. Less than 30 years ago, car seats weren’t required for kids. This was estimated by 1984 only half of all children under the age of four were in car seats. The mid 1970s for children car safety was beginning to make an impact on parents and they started thinking “I don’t want my child to get hurt”. Before this invention parents used to put there kids in canvas bags. Thanks Leonard Rivkin for being a big part in Car Safety with your invention of the child seat.  This man used to own a furniture shop. How cool is that?

Air Bags- You might be wondering what an airbag is?An airbag is a soft pillow to land against, if you are ever in a car crash. Statistics reduce the risk of dying in a direct frontal crash by 30 percent. Today, some cars go beyond having dual airbags to having 6 or even 8 airbags. What an airbag wants to do is to slow the passengers speed to zero with little or no damage. You
know what John W. Hetrick you deserve a round of applause.

Crash Test Dummies-  This was made for testing out inventions in the car to see if its going to be safe to put on sale. This way companies put out SAFE products and they keep their buyers safe. The Dummy is placed inside the test vehicle and is put on the seat, then is put in the position that a regular person would be sitting in and then is tested. Samuel W. Alderson  AMAZING JOB with this and your creation. Your name will be remembered.

Ultimately… This Quote I found really meant something “Everything in life is somewhere else, and you get there in a car.”~E.B. White, One Man’s Meat, 1943 meaning that anywhere you want to go such as, to work, home, school or even a vacation you get there in a car. Everywhere you go in a car you will need Car Safety, if you want you and your family to be safe.

The Importance Of The Matthew Movement

The Importance of The Matthew Movement

By: Matthew Mendizabal

The need for car safety started in 1800’s when Mercedes Benz made the first car. People started to die get injured and had to go to the hospital. Kids didn’t wear their seatbelt people didn’t pay attention to the road and crash.  Since the first car hit the road cars have begin to get safer.

Crash Test Dummies

Crash test dummies were invented by Samuel W. Alderson he was born (October 21, 1914 – February 11, 2005) He was the inventor of the crash test dummies. A crash test dummy is a plastic human that is built  to see what will happen to humans in car crashes.  The only thing a crash test dummy can do is break into pieces. Crash test dummies only move when they get impact in a crash test. on October 30, 2014 Humanetics made new crash test dummies that weigh 100 more because more people in America are getting more fat.

Seat Belts

The modern seat belt were made by Nils Bohlin in 1959. He was born on (July 17, 1920 – September 26, 2002) He was the inventor of the seat belt a seat belt is a strap that’s rubber it goes over your shoulder and across your chest to your waist. Volvo was the first car company to make seat belts Volvo was made by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson they created the company in April 14, 1927.  Assar Gabrielsson was born on(
August 13, 1891 – May 28, 1962) Gustaf Larson ( July 8, 1887 – July 4, 1968 ) Seat belts are made for people to survival car crashes so they don’t get hit that hard or take a big impact.

Air Bags

Air bags were made by John Hetrick he was born on(1840 – 1934)airbags were insulted in 1980′s and early 1990′s. Air bags were made for cars so people don’t hit hard on the steering wheel or anywhere else in the car. Frontal airbags have saved 25,782 lives between 1987 and 2008. However, they are supplemental safety devices. Always wear your seat belt. Place children 12 and younger in the back seat. The rear seat is the safest for children.
Cars are safer now, but people should be careful before they hit the road.  Be sure to check your car to see if there is anything wrong. I found this quote: “It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road. ~Author Unknown” So don’t be that nut and do everything you can to keep yourself safe.

Civil Right Movement

The Importance of Civil Right Movement

By: Joshua Chavez

The Civil Rights movement started in the 1950’s, Before the Civil rights black people weren’t treated equally and segregation in schools forced colored people out of white people school.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr was a great man but was arrested many times. He was born in Atlanta, GA. He was educated in Booker T.
Washington High School. When he speaks it sounds like he runs the country. Before he became famous he was a pastor at a church. In August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr was on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial giving his famous “I have a Dream” speech at the end of the movement. About 200,000 people went to see Martin Luther King Jr give his speech. He influenced African Americans all over the USA to join him in peaceful marches and protests.

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks was a brave woman that became an icon for the Civil Rights movement. She was born in Tuskegee, AL. She was coming back home from work. She was getting on the bus and found a seat then a few minutes later, a white passenger came. She w
ouldn’t give up her bus seat to the white passenger. So she was arrested because she didn’t give up her seat, it was the law back then. Then when she w
as released from prison she was the leader of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Little Rock Nine

The little rock nine are nine brave black students that wanted to go to the high school near their homes.  On September 24, 1957 the nine students go to Central High School which is only for white people only and the Little Rock Nine are black. At first they weren’t allowed to go to that school because the Governor of Arkansas and white people near the school.  Segregation had ended so they were allowed to go any school they wanted. They ended getting into school because they were guarded by US soldiers sent by President Eisenhower.  The Little Rock 9 were picked on by white students.  One was even burned by her classmates, but they never gave up and kept coming back to school.

As a result of the Civil Right movement Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and The Little Rock Nine all changed the rules of the USA. They all showed the country that there was no reason to treat other people differently because they are human beings and should be treated equally.

Movement Essay

The Importance of Kids Safety Movement

By: Natalya

The Kids Safety Movement was a very important event to remember to this day. In the 1970’s when children were born, hospitals would charge parents a lot in their insurance funds. Also, back then there were no car seats, or gates. Since then, car seats were never invented so more children can get hurt easily. Over the past years everything has changed.

Child Seats

Over the years a man named Leonard Rivkin came up with a brilliant idea. CAR SEATS!! Leonard Rivkin has also made the most popular children seats called The Booster Seats. Booster seats were very popular back then and now, kids under 4-7 unless kids are too small now will be allowed to use the booster seats. Car Seats are exactly like Booster Seats but the only difference is that Car Seats have belts that are connected to the baby seat and it protects the child from getting hurt.

Bike Helmets

When it comes to training kids to ride a bike its very hard to keep them safe because its not YOU riding the bike its your CHILD thats riding it. Sometimes kids don’t like wearing their helmets just because its cool and other kids are wearing it, but what kids don’t know is when you have your helmet on it will protect you when you fall but when you don’t have a helmet on kids.  Your helmet will only work if you put it on
properly.  Make sure your helmet isn’t too big or too small.  If you are worried that your helmet isn’t right for you, you can ask someone that works at a bike store.

Bike helmets, baby gates, and car seats are all inventions that help keep kids safe.  Parents rely on safe products that need to be used correctly to keep their children safe. With today’s technology it has been very helpful because less kids get hurt and more kids are safer.

Amanda’s Tobacco Safety Movement

Tobacco safety movement

by: Amanda carpio

Tobacco and the use of it has been going on for more than 400 years including 2014. Smoking has killed many people also people suffer of having a hole and tube in there neck to breath. Packaging for tobacco has now changed to warn people or young adults about the dangers of

Now in 2014, 30% fewer people smoke now than then because back in the day they thought that tobacco healed everything. Every week more than 8,400 people die from smoking. Smoking does hurt your body including your lungs and heart. For each of those deaths young teenagers and adults become smokers and smoke every day.Cigarettes have chemicals like methanol, methane, toluene, and tar. Each of these can cause many bad things when you consume them.

Back in the day they had to ban TV ads that were cigarette based. They had to ban those ads because younger adults and children were influenced by those ads. That means no more advertising on anything else for example clothing, mugs, socks.

Back in the day people would put lettuce in the tobacco tube to try and help their addiction and hope it would be the same. There’s a lot of people trying to help people with their addiction with a whole load of treatment.
